Tea tree extract is obtained from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia through steam distillation and contains terpinen-4-ol as its most important bioactive compound. The substance shows broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses and effectively inhibits the growth of Cutibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Malassezia fungus. Terpinen-4-ol disrupts bacterial cell membranes, causing leakage of cell contents leading to their inactivation. Anti-inflammatory properties via inhibition of cytokine signaling complement the antibacterial effect and reduce redness and swelling during active breakouts. A four percent concentration has shown comparable efficacy to benzoyl peroxide against acne in studies, but with fewer side effects and a better tolerance profile.
