Phytosphingosine
Barrier-strengthening lipid for sensitive skin
Phytosphingosine is one of skincare's most underrated ingredients, a sphingolipid naturally found in the skin's outermost layer and crucial for barrier function and integrity. It combines barrier strengthening with active antibacterial effects and inflammation combat, three properties rarely found in a single skincare ingredient. This makes it an excellent choice for sensitive skin that needs broad protection. At SKNLÛX, you will find a carefully selected range from leading K-beauty brands.

Phytosphingosine is a naturally occurring sphingolipid that constitutes an important component of the skin's lipid bilayer and plays a central role in barrier function. The substance works in three complementary ways: it strengthens the barrier by supporting ceramide synthesis and lipid organization, it inhibits the growth of Cutibacterium acnes and other acne-causing bacteria, and it reduces inflammation via inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway. In formulations, the ingredient works synergistically with ceramides and fatty acids to rebuild a compromised barrier. Clinical studies show that topical application reduces acne lesions and improves barrier function in atopic dermatitis and dry skin. It is also biocompatible and rarely causes reactions despite its potency, making it useful for sensitive skin types. In Korean skincare, it is combined with niacinamide, panthenol, and allantoin in therapeutic formulations. Regular application results in noticeably clearer, calmer, and more balanced skin with a strengthened barrier and improved tolerance to external stressors.
